In the biological sense, an adult animal or human is one that has completely grown. For humans an adult's term has implications that are based on social and legal concepts. Legal adult means a person attains the age of adulthood and is considered an independent, self-sufficient person as well as responsible. A legal adult can be referred to as a major. The age of 18 is the standard legal age for adulthood, although this may vary based on the country of origin and status in law, as well the maturity of the mind.

The lifespan of human beings Adulthood refers to the point in which the person has achieved full intellectual and physical maturation. Adulthood usually begins at the age of 21. Middle age starts at approximately 40 before being followed by an elderly age of 60. In adulthood there are three distinct phases early adulthood (18-30 years) middle adulthood (30-60 year olds) and Late adulthood (60%-60%). Physical maturation has been completed by the time we reach our early adulthood years (20-40s) however, the weight and height may be a little higher. In early adulthood our physical abilities reach their highest levels. These include muscle strength and reaction time.
